My take is that His Shadow is the part of the intelligence (or essence, or soul) that is passed along from host to host.. It is a shadow of the original Bug. The main part/essence seems to be a separate thing which can be summoned by the current host, though who knows where it hangs out.... And I have no idea about the cloak...... I'll have to think on it a bit more...Flare:
Hmmmm....Well, the cloak is definitely part of it - it dissolves off the old HDS and reforms on the new...Windlily:
Yeah, it does... So, what is it? [think, think] ...though the cloak didn't manifest when HDS jumped into Yottskry...[Flare: - I think we're supposed to assume that Kai is the carrier of HDS' essence...]

Well, they are going to have to come up with one hell of a good reason to explain that eye thing at the end of GigaShadow. HS did saw that Kai was too strong to take over, didn't he? He told Yottskry that he gave Kai his memories - but Yottskry was weak [laugh - yeah, right. He seemed a pretty strong person to me!] and would get to transport HDS' essence. So how about this: HS' essence (or perhaps something similar to a back-up copy?) is lurking around in Kai's head, just biding its time until it can finds the right one to jump into. Kai appears to be too strong a personality to overcome, and Stan (the perfect weak-willed host) is too close to Kai for HS to take and escape without running afoul of Kai. Hmmm... I'll think more on it. Any ideas your side?Flare:
This sounds neat to me. But what do you think about this?...
Kai's state of death gives him the ability to steal memories in the same way as His Shadow can. (Is this a function of protoblood?) Does Kai's being wholly controlled by HS require him to share some of the shadow essence? And if so, does that explain the swirly effect in his eyes at the end of GS - the essence has been there all along, rather than being passed to him before HS left the Lexx? Does protoblood confer telepathy?Windlily [laughing]:
I think you've hit the solution and the Beans are just trying to throw us off the trail! Huum...another thought to throw in here...perhaps the memory/essence that Kai has of HDS is trying to gain control there?Flare [grinning]:
Actually, I threw it in as a fairly remote possibility, but it would answer a few questions, especially if the Brunnen-G DID bring the IC with them into the LU [see Chronologies]......... hmmmmm...... [sound of gears clunking again......]

OK...... HDS is an essence, something without real substance (well, for the most part [Windlily glares at that danged cloak]...) hanging out who knows where. He goes (or some of him goes) into a host, right? Well, maybe he'd become unanchored from his host when going through such a vortex, and become lost in it? That would explain why he high-tailed it out of the Lexx: he couldn't survive going through the core in the shape - or lack thereof - that he's in right now. How does that sound?Flare:
Sounds reasonable... Briseis has emailed me with another interesting suggestion:
His Shadow can travel to any universe he feels like, and so can the GigaShadow eggs - but they can't be in different universes.... Since the essence of His Shadow seems to come from the GigaShadow-to-be (the egg) I think it's quite possible that it'd malfunction without being in the same universe as its origin. How does that sound?Windlily:

It certainly limits HS' power. Otherwise he'd be far too powerful... I'm sure more about this will crop up in the series. In the meantime - I'm afraid it's yet another of those "I'll think more on it"!!.....
