This simple yet effective meditation is an incantation with eight verses, and is based on Fu Xi's arrangement of the Ba Gua ("eight figures"). It invokes the still point at the centre of the mandala (the first four verses produce a cross - with you at the crux - while the final four verses mark points around the encircling horizon).
Even simply reading the following verses can induce a calm yet invigorated mood, but when you actually face north and actively imagine the mindscape arranged around you, the effect is not only cleansing and peaceful but wonderfully empowering. Try it and see!
Before and below me lies the holy dark body of the Earth
revolving around the still point of the stars.
Behind and above me flares the unquenchable light of Heaven
and the infinite glory that enlightens the lives of all.
On my right rises the fiery force of dawn
the birth of beginnings and the vigour of the young.
On my left cascades the effortless dusk
the culmination of deeds and the relief of the old.
Before my right profound mystery rumbles and quakes
writhing in the throes of wondrous dreams.
Behind my right the mirror of lake-deep reflection lies
revealing truth's perfect symmetry.
Behind my left emotion's rushing gale sweeps all before it
roiling thoughts conjure phantoms in the air.
Before my left the pinnacle of exultation soars
enshrining the secrets of the sage's retreat.
