This exhibit is probably Roman Oxfordshire red ware, and has been identified as the base of a goblet-shaped cup; a wide base narrowing to a short stem and then bowling out to form the cup part. It is in three pieces which fit beautifully together but has been crudely reconstructed (with the white material) at some time in the 20th century. It was probably made in the 3rd century. It imitated Samian ware and has a hard, fine textured fabric. Oxfordshire red ware is wheel thrown and was widely distributed throughout Britain.

Found at Brislington Roman villa site during the development of what is now Winchester Road in December 1899. The villa is contemporary with several others in the region, built about AD 270 as a working farm with workshops until destroyed by fire about AD 370.

Photographs exhibited with kind permission of Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, which has this in its collection (reference number Fb6913).
