These sherds were among a collection of similar, tin-glazed, blue and white pottery that were donated to Bristol Museum and Art Gallery in 1923. The labels indicate they were found in "St Anne's Well". The holy well in St Anne's Wood was cleaned in 1923 as part of the restoration work in the valley immediately prior to its opening as a public park in 1924, and it is known that at least one other item was donated to the museum at that time (a wooden water pipe, apparently lost in the Bristol Blitz of World War Two).

Although W J Pountney found similar sherds in a well in the graveyard of the Chapel of St Anne in the Wood in 1914, these exhibits appear to be from the holy well itself, which provides significant dating evidence for it. They probably date to the early 18th century.

Photographs exhibited with kind permission of Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, which has this in its collection (reference: St Anne's Well 1923 - Drawer 3a).
