This newspaper headline - Alleged Pollution of Brislington Brook - could be contemporary, but this is from 1900.

The article describes the situation after Brislington installed a sewerage system in or around 1892, but a little way upstream, Knowle was still discharging raw effluent into the watercourse. "James Sinnott, member of Brislington Parish Council, said last summer the stream was extremely offensive, and so recently as Monday last it was polluted and unfit for cattle to drink."

Western Daily Press - Friday 27 July 1900, page 5, col 7.
