A note about voices
In the first episode of the Kyoto Arc, Watari says he was born in Kyoto but raised in Osaka, which accounts for his "outrageous Southern accent". I know that the Osaka accent has a certain reputation in anime - Trigun's Wolfwood and CCS's Kero both have it - and if you listen carefully to the anime, there is a difference between Watari's accent and those of the other charas, but what it means to the Japanese I don't know. (Obviously!) So what I've done, with blithe disregard for life, limb and lynchings, is to try (with less than perfect success) to give the scientist a Devonshire accent, which although not exactly outrageous, is Southern, and quite distinctive. Rural, shall we say. Soft and lazy, rounded vowels and dropped consonants. Personally I find the idea of a genius like Watari sounding like a yokel quite cute. (Ay'm from Deb'n, this time 'roun'. Even soun' like it, when Ay'm tired and me diction slips…) For those who've seen Casualty, think Abs. OK, his accent isn't Devonshire, quite, but it has the sort of contrast to the other, more precisely-spoken, characters that I'm imagining…
